Journey of Recovery

October 1, 2015 by Kayce L.

Recovery is a journey. A change in lifestyle, friends and ourselves. I myself look back and have nothing but gratitude for the choice I made to make that change in my life.

A wise sponsor said ” this is a all a journey and a process one
day at a time.'” If i try to practice these principals in all my affairs,
falling very short some days, it is a beautiful journey. A higher power
Helps me to do what i thought could not be done. not choosing
A first drink a first impulse.

For me this is quite the conundrum.I am sober and glad of that .However I wish I could move forward at a faster pace.Making me more normal like those I see that have always been sober.

Hey Shane I know that feeling of thinking you’re not growing fast enough. I’m at 8 months now and still get down on myself because I’m not where I want to be. My biggest flaw is comparing my self to others. But you and I both have to remember that this isn’t a competition. It’s doing the best we can, one day at a time, and knowing that hard work will and always does pay off. We might not have the nice car or job or significant other or material things we want, but nothing is more priceless than the integrity, humility and serenity that comes with working a solid program. Keep your chin up and know that you are where you are meant to be at this moment.

      • Shane says:

Yeah ,Renee I’m at 643 days sober. However I still struggle with just being comfortable .The life I live now is good. I just have to remind myself of that daily.Thank you for your thoughtful reply and congratulations on 8 months .It can seem like a lifetime.

i have over 19 years and still struggle sometimes. It has and always will be that way. Gratitude is difficult for people who never saw the grace we received while we were drinking. We should all be dead, by all rights. Take it easy and give yourself a break. Nobody does this perfectly. Pay attention to what you have in this moment and thank God that you’re alive!

    • Shane says:

Beautifully expressed Susie . Thank you

Thank you, I needed to read that. Reminds me to want the things I have not to have the things I want.

I pray all the time Susie I love life.!!!!!

    • Deborah says:

Thank you Susie, in less than 2 weeks I will be celebrating 19 years, and yes I still have my moments when my insides just not feeling right, I am grateful for this Program Of AA and the Traditions for helping me to connect with a Higher Power of my understanding , so long as at times like today, all I need to do is ask for help , apply the tools and leave the Results to Higher Power…
